Grade 7 Rational Numbers- ADDITION @classes6782

What are Rational Numbers?

A rational number is any number that can be written as a fraction, where the numerator and denominator are integers and the denominator is not zero.

Examples:

  • 12,34,0,5,7\frac{1}{2}, \frac{-3}{4}, 0, 5, -7 (All are rational numbers)

➕ What is Addition of Rational Numbers?

Addition of rational numbers means combining two or more rational values.
We follow these rules:

  • Same denominators → Add numerators

  • Different denominators → Use LCM to make same denominators

🎯 Why is Adding Rational Numbers Important?

1. Used in Real Life

  • Balancing bank accounts (profits and losses)

  • Measuring temperatures (positive and negative degrees)

  • Handling debts and credits (positive and negative money)

2. Foundational for Algebra

  • Helps in simplifying expressions

  • Used when solving equations and formulas

3. Develops Logical Thinking

  • Teaches students to compare values, use LCM, and apply signs correctly

  • Helps improve problem-solving and reasoning skills

4. Needed for Higher Classes

  • Addition of rational numbers is the base for:

    • Algebraic equations

    • Rational expressions

    • Data handling

🧠 Example:

Add:

23+56\frac{2}{3} + \frac{-5}{6}

👉 LCM of 3 and 6 is 6

=46+56=16= \frac{4}{6} + \frac{-5}{6} = \frac{-1}{6}
