Air is all around us, even though we can’t see it. It is a mixture of different gases that we breathe in to stay alive. Let’s learn more about the air we breathe.
What is Air?
Air is a combination of many gases, but the two most important ones are:
- Oxygen: The gas we need to breathe to stay alive.
- Nitrogen: This makes up most of the air, but our body doesn’t use it directly.
There are also other gases like carbon dioxide and small amounts of water vapor.
Why Do We Need Air?
- Breathing: All living things need oxygen to survive. When we breathe in, our lungs take in oxygen from the air, and when we breathe out, we release carbon dioxide.
- Plants Need Air: Plants use carbon dioxide from the air to make food through a process called photosynthesis.
How Air Helps Us
- Provides Oxygen: Air supplies oxygen, which our body uses to produce energy.
- Keeps Us Cool: Air helps in cooling our body when we sweat.
- Helps Birds and Planes Fly: Air allows birds, insects, and airplanes to fly because it provides lift.
What Happens If Air is Polluted?
Air pollution happens when harmful substances mix with the air, making it dirty. Common causes of air pollution include:
- Smoke from factories and vehicles
- Burning garbage or leaves
- Dust from construction sites
Effects of Air Pollution:
- Breathing polluted air can cause health problems like coughing and allergies.
- It can harm plants, animals, and even damage buildings.
How Can We Keep the Air Clean?
- Plant more trees: Trees clean the air by taking in carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen.
- Use bicycles or walk: This reduces pollution from vehicles.
- Avoid burning garbage: It reduces harmful smoke.
Fun Fact!
Did you know that Earth’s atmosphere (air layer around the planet) protects us from the sun’s harmful rays and keeps the planet warm enough for us to live?
Air is precious, and it's our responsibility to keep it clean for a healthy and safe environment!
