Class 5 EVS Chapter 13 Our Environment and Pollution @kidsknowledgepoint

The environment is everything around us, including air, water, soil, plants, and animals. It provides us with everything we need to live, like clean air to breathe, water to drink, and food to eat. But sadly, our environment is getting polluted, which is harming all living things.

What is Pollution?

Pollution is when harmful substances are added to our environment, making it dirty and unhealthy. These substances are called pollutants, and they come from different sources.

Types of Pollution

  1. Air Pollution

    • What is it? Air pollution happens when harmful gases, smoke, and dust are released into the air.
    • Sources: Factories, vehicles, burning garbage, and smoke from chimneys.
    • Effects: It causes breathing problems, allergies, and makes the air unhealthy.
  2. Water Pollution

    • What is it? Water pollution occurs when harmful substances mix with water bodies like rivers, lakes, and oceans.
    • Sources: Throwing garbage, chemicals from factories, and sewage waste into water.
    • Effects: It kills fish and other water animals, and makes the water unsafe for drinking.
  3. Soil Pollution

    • What is it? Soil pollution happens when harmful chemicals and waste make the soil dirty.
    • Sources: Plastic waste, pesticides, chemicals from factories, and oil spills.
    • Effects: It reduces the quality of soil, making it difficult for plants to grow.
  4. Noise Pollution

    • What is it? Noise pollution is when there is too much loud sound around us.
    • Sources: Honking vehicles, loudspeakers, construction work, and factory machines.
    • Effects: It causes stress, hearing problems, and disturbs our sleep.

How Can We Reduce Pollution?

  • Plant more trees: Trees clean the air and provide fresh oxygen.
  • Use public transport or cycle: This reduces the number of vehicles on the road, which helps reduce air pollution.
  • Avoid using plastic: Use cloth bags instead of plastic bags.
  • Save water: Turn off taps when not in use to prevent water wastage.
  • Recycle and reuse: Recycle paper, glass, and plastic to reduce waste.

Conclusion

Pollution is a big problem that harms our environment and health. We must all work together to reduce pollution and protect our environment for a cleaner and healthier world.
