What is the Abacus?

An abacus is a simple counting tool used for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. It has rods and beads to help children visualize numbers and perform calculations easily.

Simple Example of Abacus Addition:

Add 24 + 13 using an abacus:

  • Put 2 beads on the tens rod (for 20) and 4 on the ones rod.

  • Then add 1 bead on tens (for 10) and 3 on ones.

  • You’ll get 3 beads on tens (30) and 7 on ones → Answer: 37
